In 1844, Hermann Grassmann (1809–77) published the revolutionary but little-understood Die Lineale Ausdehnungslehre (also reissued in this series), anticipating the modern theory of vector spaces and exterior algebras. This extended version of his theories appeared in 1862. It remains an important text in the history of mathematics.
